Festivals at Moss Garden are seasonal celebrations that bring us in touch with nature, family and community. In our modern “instant” society, where frozen meals cook up in one minute and we can find strawberries in January, it’s easy to forget the rhythms of the year. The commercialism of the major holidays can take the beauty and wonder out of these special occasions. At Moss Garden we celebrate each season as a way to bring us closer to nature and to each other.
- Fall Festival – We celebrate the harvest by making “stone soup” together. We gather together outdoors bringing harvest vegetables to peel and chop and cook in a large iron pot.
- Lantern Walk – Families gather at night, listen to a story puppet play, and walk through the woods at night carrying hand-made lanterns.
- Spiral of Light – We create a reverent mood by walking through a spiral of evergreen boughs by candlelight.
- Spring Festival – In celebration of the awakening of nature, we create miniature spring gardens and have a hunt for the symbols of rebirth; colored eggs, flowers, and chicks.
- May Day – We sing and dance around a traditional May Pole with a potluck picnic following the festivities.
