Waldorf education, based on the teachings of Rudolf Steiner, emphasizes the importance of play in the early years to develop the child’s imagination. Because preschool children learn through imitation, the role of the teacher is to create an environment of beauty and goodness through colors, natural toys, materials, stories, songs and activities. We influence children by who we are, by the goodness and warmth, love and trust we express. The role of rhythm also plays an important part in Waldorf education. The rhythm of the year, of the seasons, and of the day impact the child’s development, aptitude for learning, and sense of security. We respond by having a consistent daily schedule of balanced activities that include time for active play, circle time, handworks and outdoor play. Seasonal changes are met with stories, songs, movement and activities that celebrate nature and support a child’s curiosity and interest in the natural world. |
